United won the Shield for the third time in four years as they avenged last year's Wembley defeat to Chelsea.

A sublime opener finished by Antonio Valencia and a comical debut goal from substitute Javier Hernandez put United 2-0 up.

Salomon Kalou pulled a goal back late on and double-winning Chelsea threatened to level before Dimitar Berbatov sealed their fate in stoppage time.

Valencia gave last season's runners-up the lead against the Barclays Premier League champions four minutes before half-time.

SEALED VICTORY

The Ecuador winger swept home a superb first-time cross by Wayne Rooney who had been put clear down the right by a glorious raking pass from Paul Scholes.

New signing Hernandez got the second 14 minutes from time.

John O'Shea released Valencia down the right and the winger's low cross was met by the Mexican, who slipped, kicking the ball against his own face and into the net.

Chelsea were given a lifeline seconds later when Edwin Van der Sar parried a shot straight to Kalou, who swept home the rebound.

Last season's double winners were well on top and Didier Drogba hit the side-netting from the narrowest of angles ina thrilling finale.

Kalou failed to control a Drogba cross in stoppage-time before United sealed victory, Nani releasing Berbatov, who coolly lobbed the ball over a stranded Hilario.
